DLJ -- DLJ, the firm Mr. Donaldson founded in 1959 with two Harvard Business School classmates, Daniel Lufkin and Richard Jenrette, isn't just a highly regarded former brokerage firm (it was bought by Credit Suisse First Boston in 2000). It virtually invented the concept of independent research aimed at institutional investors, and was also the first NYSE member firm to issue shares to the public, in 1970.
