When having what remains of my hair cut I am usually asked what number of cut I want, "number one" being the shortest. Is this a standard scale and if so, who devised it?

    Question #57348. Asked by gmackematix.

The 'feet' or clipper attachments (made by Wahl) are numbered from (usually) from 1 to 8. These numbers are measurements of parts of an inch.

The shortest, however, in hairdressing lingo, is a zero, which is no feet attached --to get that cueball effect happening.

    Here are the actual measurements:

    #0 (no attachment) - 1/100 inch,
    #1 - 1/8 inch,
    #2 - 1/4 inch,
    #3 - 3/8 inch,
    #4 - 1/2 inch,
    #5 and #6 - special tapering attachments
    #7 - 7/8 inch, and
    #8 - 1 inch.

I had a haircut just today, and verified that my barber knew this scale by asking him if my haircut was a "#1" size (VERY trim), to which he repleid in the affirmative..

So it seems to be a universally-used scale. (I live in India.)

Yes, for eight loooooong years of my life I became a Senior Master Stylist which, at the time was the highest level available to achieve. So, always being one for a challenge, I then opted for a change of scenery...
