I have often heard the invention of the internet being attributed to Al Gore, but on what basis has this claim been perceived?

Did Al Gore really invent the internet? They are named after musical instruments in French, after precious stones in Swedish and are often wrongly attributed to a Norwegian leading to a giant one being sculpted. Where have over 30 million of these objects been collected and why? [A picture of some or all of this collection would be nice] Aside from Al Gore, have any other candidates won the popular vote but lost the Presidency? What is Al Gore's middle name?
