    May 30, 1896 -- The first automobile accident occurred in New York City when Henry Wells of Springfield, Mass., in a Duryea Motor Wagon collided with Ms. Evylyn Thomas, a bicycle rider, who was taken to Manhattan Hospital. He leg was fractured, and Wells spent the night in jail awaiting a report as to the extent of the injuries.
