Both my brother and my husband have been fascinated by runes since reading "The Lord of the Rings" in their teens. I imagine that they are far from alone among Tolkien fans.

Runes can be just letters or can be used for divination. Mostly northern languages were written in runes, which are probably derived from the Roman alphabet - so people say. The other northern alphabet was Ogham, which was rather unusual in being normally written along the edges of things.

I have heard of a bird called a ruffed grouse, but I don't think I have heard of any other types of grouses. Are there others?

On some American Bandstand shows from the mid-to-late 1970s, they'd come back from break after whoever had 'performed' live, and Dick Clark would do a 10 to 15 second tease for whatever was coming up in the second half, and then the camera would pan across the audience, who'd all be clapping and swaying to the same song. It's a funky-synth instrumental song I've heard maybe 3 times on the radio, but I've never heard the artist/title announced. Anyone know this?

I've heard someone say that a duck's quack doesn't echo, but I've also heard they have proven otherwise. So, does anyone know if a duck's quack echoes?
