This is the spelling in my reference books, but I've seen it spelled differently in some places.

Not to worry, TT, that's the standard spelling.
As for "most highly-regarded" work, The Sistine Ceiling is certainly the best-known work, but Michelangelo himself wouldn't be pleased. He regarded himself as a sculptor, first and foremost, and art historians actually tend to be rather more interested in his works in marble, since he cared most about them.
Though I admire the "Ancestor" lunettes. As they were being cleaned back in the 80's, they answered a lot of questions about the development of 16th-century painting.
