    You're probably talking about the "Camicie rosse," or "Red Shirts." They were also called "I Mille," meaning "The Thousand."

    I suppose someone may have muttered that phrase, but by the time Garibaldi took Naples, his forces had swelled with more volunteers and reinforcements, so do you suppose perhaps they might have been called 'The Twenty-three thousand and eighty six Red Shirts"?
