I'm sure there is a (French?) word for the tendency of a perfume's scent to hang in the air after the wearer has gone. Can anyone remind me what that word is?

What about "une nuée de parfum"? A thin cloud of perfume lingering behind? "Nuage" would be too strong for just a smattering of scent.
Or might a "puff of scent" meet the criteria too?

Aha! I've found the word and it means the trail left behind by a perfume.
It is French and begins with an "s".

Sillage, perhaps.

Mais oui, LF, you have sniffed it out.
"Sillage" comes from the French word for the wake left by a boat.
