A certain diplomat, better known in another field of endeavor, negotiated a peace treaty between two traditional enemies in the first half of the 17th century. Among other rewards, he received a rather nice assignment from a king. Who was he, what was the treaty, and what did this gentleman end up doing for the appreciative royal?

He was Peter Paul Reubens; the treaty was between England and Spain, signed at Madrid in 1630 (but it isn't known as the Treaty of Madrid); and Reubens got the commission for the spectacular ceiling of the Banqueting House at Whitehall (and a knighthood).
