I'm sure some physics/chemistry nut (lol) will explain it further, since I don't really know, but you don't need oxygen.

It's the good old triangle of combustion: oxygen, fuel and heat. Take away any one and the fire goes out. Or so they tell you when you're doing your training in fire fighting...
