Jean Valjean is the central character in Victor Hugo's novel "Les Misérables." I imagine that the novel has been adapted for the stage more than once, but the best known adaptation is probably the musical with music by Claude-Michel Schonberg and lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer.
The novel (and, I believe, the musical) covers a considerable period of time, but the turning point is probably the July Revolution of 1830.

Jean Valjean is the protagonist of Victor Hugo's novel, "Les Miserables" (1862) on which the musical is based. I've not seen the musical, but in the novel, the Paris Insurrection of 1832 plays a significant role.
