Well, I was tempted to say that it was when my then 12-year-old great grandmother, the only person in her family willing to drive the car her father had just bought in the early 1900's, drove it into a tree after one lesson from the salesman.
However, the first manufacturers of gas-powered cars in the U.S. were Charles and Frank Duryea, in the 1890's, and my guess is that they had one or two accidents along the way. According to this site, the first recorded motor vehicle accident anywhere took place when Nicholas Cugnot drove his steam-powered machine into a wall in 1771 (!).
