In fact, the Nile is straggly in comparison. The Amazon contains a fifth of the world's river water and it sends such a vast flood into the Atlantic that the water is still fresh 50 to 100 miles from the shore. It has over 200 tributaries, of which 17 are longer than the Thames and its drainage area covers about one-third of the South American continent.
