Well, as a veteran, in one way or another, of several colleges and universities, I can tell you that this stems simply from the assignment of numbers in the 100s to courses primarily designed for freshmen and other neophytes. The first 100-level course in each department is therefore given the number "1." Why not just call an introductory course "100"? Some schools, including the one where I did my graduate training, do exactly that.

Is there any connection with Room 101 in George Orwell's novel "Nineteen Eighty-Four"? :)

Strictly speaking, no, bloomsby, but millions of U.S. college freshmen would probably beg to differ.
And, having been their nightmare "Big Sister" every now and then, I can't say I blame them. (Snicker, snicker.)

Smiles and many thanks, LF. I'm highly amused by the reference to "Big Sister". It has, however, one little drawback by comparison with the one and only "BB".
