"Parole" refers to the early release of a prisoner on condition that he or she will observe certain requirements of behavior and be monitored in order to ensure compliance.
"Probation" is a sentence imposed in lieu of jailtime, again on condition that the probationer obey certain rules and regularly report to a monitor.
