This esteemed condiment is closely associated with a one-time Etruscan settlement that was later ruled for 500 years by a distinguished family of art patrons (and also boasts a building designed by someone with a name important to me). What is this fine food item, and where is it most famously made?

Well, the early architect Lanfranco designed the cathedral of Modena, which was for a long time part of the Este family dominions. And Modena is famous for its balsamic vinegar.

Yes! We actually know little about Lanfranco, more's the pity, but Modenese balsamic vinegar is terrific. Worth the price.
