The Romans had water closets of some description, Thomas Crapper mass produced flush toilets, but according to the book 'Up the Cistern' the flush toilet as we know it was invented long before by Sir John Harington, a courtier of Queen Elizabeth the 1st, in the 16th century.

Apparently according to

and a few other places on the net, it was a myth that Crapper invented the toilet. Some plumber invented it. John Harrington was credited with inventing the first W.C. however.
