Why, in tennis, do they use such a confusing scoring system?

You make a good point, I do know that the score 'Love' comes from a French word meaning zero.

It's not confusing to tennis players, obviously, but the continuation of the system has more to do with tradition than a need for streamlining, and that suits me just fine. This site explains the origins and some possible answers to your question.
