Going back a lot further there is evidence of cart tracks in a quarry in Blunsdon Ridge near Swindon, UK, which suggests that Roman traffic was on the left.

Well,Napoleon is not to be blamed on,neither the Romans are.The reason is that the knights held their swords in their right hand,and as a result,they rode their horses on the left side of the road to allow themselves attack their enemy coming in front of them!

I did an extensive report on the topic and kokomania is exactly right. Napoleon is responsible mainly for why mainland Europe drives on the right. The UK has always been on the left because most people are right-handed. Japan has always been on the left for the same reason.
