Fearing a trick question, and since you do not specifically say "American colonists", I shall chip in with the Mother Country, e.g. France for Louisiana, Spain for Mexico and Peru, and Portugal for Brazil.

For the original American Colonies the British Crown would fall under 'the Mother Country'. I just wanted to cover all the bases.

Sorry Barker, my eyes don't see as well as they used to. Notice the "whom" in the question, I am looking for the person.

Presumably, you're speaking of George III. However, the first British colony was established at Jamestown in 1607, and James I was king at the time. "Prior" can, of course, to refer to all of the years between Jamestown's founding and the Revolution. There were also French and Spanish colonists in various parts of what is now the U.S.

Yes lanfranco, King George III was the answer I was looking for. I guess my question was not phrased properly.
