The name has been explained as deriving from the Turkish “bulga” (mixed), referring to the mixed race that the Bulgarians represent. This seems likely, since the Bulgarians are believed to have originated as a Turkic tribe of Central Asia, and travelled west of the Volga to integrate with the Slavs of the Black Sea coast.

Googling etymology "bulgaria" produces this,
M.L., from Bulgari "Bulgarians," perhaps lit. "the men from the Bolg," the River Volga, upon whose banks they lived until 6c. But the people's name for themselves in O.Bulg. was Blugarinu, which suggests a different origin.

Well, that's true. The Bulgars are a tribe originating from the West of the Volga whose race is Fino-Ugrian (Mongolian tribes.) In 559 A.D, they invaded to the Bulgaria of nowadays and got assimilated with the Slavs.
