    Question #58153. lanfranco asks:

On this July 4th, an example of good relations between the U.S. and the U.K.: in the early 1870's, following a disaster, Queen Victoria and other English citizens did something generous for an American city. Their gesture resulted in the establishment of a major cultural institution that is still in use. What is it?

The Chicago Public Library has its beginnings in a gift of about 8,000 books from Britain after the great fire of 1871. The donation was organized by Thomas Hughes, the author of “Tom Brown’s Schooldays,” after whom the children’s library is named. Besides Hughes and Her Majesty, donors included Robert Browning, Thomas Carlyle, Lewis Carroll and Charles Kingsley.

    Huzzah, TT!

The CPL was one of the first free municipal libraries in the U.S. Its main building today is a spectacular (and controversial) example of post-modernism designed by architect Thomas Beeby that happens to be the largest public library building in the country. Queen Victoria probably wouldn't approve, but I rather like it.
