Known for being controversial and outspoken, especially concerning the Vietnam War, this academic once wrote a book about inconsistancies involving a prominent US murder case. Incidently, one of his last works was written whilst in jail, and he is well known for associating religion alongside superstition. Who is it, and how is he connected to barber shops?

I'm going to say that this is Bertrand Russell (1872-1970), who more or less fits all of the criteria. He did spend time in jail, examined the Kennedy assassination, and was outspoken on the Vietnam War and religion. He also came up with the Barber's Paradox:

I must say, reading the Barber's Paradox brought back some um, 'fun' memories of my hairdressing days, I tell ya.
