    Why must we push both the 'Record' and 'Play' switches to record on an audio tape recorder, and only the 'Record' on the VCR?

    An audio recorder's play button will activate the spinning of the tape, but if the record button is pressed down as well, the recording mechanism is also activated. This activation is mechanical.
    In a VCR, electronics are used to activate the recording and playing functions.
