Round the edge of the coin is the quotation "Standing on the shoulders of giants." This comes from one of Isaac Newton's letters to Robert Hooke ("If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants").

Newton was the Master of the Royal Mint from 1699 till his death in 1727.

British coins of the same denomination and mintage have identical faces but differing backs depending on the mint where they were struck. On the face of the £2 coin, the words "ELIZABETH II DEI GRA REG FID DEF" which (after allowing for abreviation) roughly translates to "Elizabeth the Second, Reigning by the grace of God, Defender of the Faith." On the edge of the £2 coin are the words "STANDING ON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS" - a quote from Sir Isaac Newton.
