Lake Wakatipu - meaning place of the giant "breathes" every five minutes - the water level rises and falls. Maori legend tells of an evil giant who abducted a Maori maiden. He was set alight by the maiden's rescuer and his burning body melted the surrounding glaciers to form a huge water-filled crater. Only the giant's beating heart survived, which is the cause of the lake's regular rising and falling.

Yay, S.O.N. and I think an island in the lake is known as the Giant's Heart. All very quaint and I don't wish to seem like a cold and unpoetic soul, but I have to ask:
Does anyone have a clue what the real explanation might be?

Throughout my two years of GCSE History, our teacher taught me a short ABC (it only goes to G) poem of the causes of the First World War. This quiz is based on it.
