# If I purchased something and the total cost was \$117.15 including tax, what would I multiply \$117.15 by to see how much I paid in sales tax, if the sales tax was .065% (6 1/2 percent)?

Question #58282. Asked by crmrealquick. (Jul 12 05 7:26 AM)

(answer subject to the accuracy of my cheapo calculator)

0.146393512 derived as follows

117.15 / 1.065 (1 plus the tax rate) = 110 (the untaxed principle)

117.15 - 110 - 17.15 (the tax)

117.15 / 17.15 = 6.83090379

Taking the reciprocal of this answer

1 / 6.83090379 = 0.146393512

test: 117.15 X 0.146393512 = 17.14999999 (approximately the taxed amount)

\$117.15 *6.5/106.5 = \$7.15.

Check:

Tax at 6.5 per cent …………\$ 7.15
