A South American hotel once displayed a mural by a well known artist that depicted an historian holding an open book which displayed a phrase that upset the community. This might be Diego Rivera's mural in the Hotel del Prado in Mexico City, in which he included the words, "God Does Not Exist":

Yes, Diego Riviera's mural 'Sunday in the Alamada' showed historian Ignacio Ramirez holding that book. When Archbishop Martinez refused to bless the hotel, an anonymous priest quietly stepped in to do the deed.

Born not far from an aqueous city, this artist is perhaps best known for his portrait of a famous man's notorious sister, depicted in the guise of a goddess. At one point in his career, he designed a monument to a great and long-dead artist, destined for a church containing a celebrated work by that artist, but the monument became his own. Who was he, who was the other artist, who was the sister, and can you find me an illustration of that provocative portrait?
