Which book, published in 1965, opens with a very repetitive strain injury?

Question #58348. Asked by gmackematix. (Jul 14 05 7:56 PM)

Gmack, I've been working on this for three days. Can you give me just the tiniest hint?

I already know it's not "Dune," "Little Big Man," "The Crying of Lot 49," "God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater," "The British Museum is Falling Down," "Zap Gun" and "Mr. Bloodmoney," "The Green Berets," "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress," "Accident," "Mrs. Stevens Hears the Mermaids Singing," "Odds Against," "The Intern," "Cotton Comes to Harlem," "Manchild in the Promised Land," "Death Dealers," "Logan's Run," "The Wanderer," "Coll and the White Pig," "The Green Berets," and --

Well, you get the picture ...

Oh, and I eliminated "The Painted Bird," too.

Frankie needs a hint? On your recent form I am surprised!
OK, the author tends to wear a white suit and at least two of his books have been made into Hollywood films. One film was quite successful but the other was a notorious flop.
Neither of those are the work in question.

Oh, hell, I thought this was a novel -- though with Wolfe, you never know, the line is drawn quite thinly, to the everlasting grousing of critics.

O.K., Tom Wolfe, "The Kandy-Kolored, Tangerine-Flake, Streamline Baby."

Of course that's a yay, Frankie! Hope you didn't strain yourself too much. :)

In case the link doesn't work for anyone, the first line is "Hernia hernia hernia" repeated with a few capital "NIA"s thrown in ad nauseam.
My clues referred to "The Right Stuff" and "Bonfire of the Vanities".
