It’s generally accepted that nicotine suppresses the appetite, but I can’t find much in the way of a biochemical explanation. Some authorities say that nicotine causes the liver to produce glycogen, which will raise the blood-sugar level and thus reduce the desire to take in calories. Princess9’s explanation also sounds persuasive.
However, not all smokers suffer from loss of appetite. I used to smoke quite a lot from my late teens till my early forties, and for most of that time I was about 30 lb (14 kg) overweight. I certainly didn’t feel any aversion to eating.
