It split in 1824, one year later in 1825 John Quincy Adams was elected as a Whig and then four years later in 1829 Andrew Jackson was elected as a Democrat.

The Whig party was not quite the immediate forerunner of the Republicans. Party terms and labels were somewhat fluid and not clear-cut until shortly before the Civil War.
The first convention of the Republican party was held in 1854, with John Fremont running as the first Republican candidate for president in 1856:
