Which much-hailed sporting record of 1964 was doubled in 2005?

Question #58781. Asked by gmackematix. (Aug 12 05 6:07 PM)

It's time this sport one was answered so I'll add that an Englishman held it in 1964 and an Australian held it in 2005.

This one was asked so long ago that I can't remember the answer to it, but I'm guessing it involved cricket.
    Any ideas?

I'm a little confused with the "much hailed" reference to the sporting record of 1964 IF it was associated with cricket. Something like the 4 minute mile would have a tag like "much hailed" due to both its significance and international importance. In 1964 I cannot see a cricket record generating much interest in the same context.

In 1964 a "very" much hailed record was Donald Campbell's breaking of both the water and land speed records.

Campbell broke the land speed record in July on Lake Eyre salt flat in central Australia, with a speed of 403.1mph (648.72km/h)

On 31st December 1964 he reached an average speed of 276.33mph (444.71km/h) in his speedboat, Bluebird, on Lake Dumbleyung in Perth, Western Australia.

The world water speed record IS held by an Australian, Ken Warby, but this was in 1978, and with only a speed of 317.6mph (511.1km/h). (which isn't double)

HOWEVER - it probably IS cricket

Shane Warne became the first bowler to take 600 Test wickets when he had Marcus Trescothick caught behind on the first day of the third Test at Old Trafford on 11th August 2005.

Freddie Trueman, the Yorkshire fast bowler was the first man from any country to take 300 Test wickets, a landmark he reached at The Oval in 1964

Howzat? I think we both know that you've got the yay for that one.
I suppose it was "much-hailed" in the cricket world at least. I think it was one of the most commonly quoted stats about fiery Fred at the peak of his fame.
