On the domestic front, Maine Coons are one of the largest breeds and I know as I have two of them

Have lynxes, ocelots and pumas been promoted from small cats in recent years?
I recall reading in a scence journal that there were only seven "big cats":
Lion, tiger, leopard, jaguar, snow leopard, clouded leopard and cheetah.

To confuse things further, looking at the individual articles, I see that lynxes, ocelots and clouded leopards are referred to as medium-sized cats or wildcats and pumas are called big cats.
Maybe the term "big cat" isn't that well defined after all.

I felt compelled to look up the "Maine Coon." While these felines are rather attractive and even flat-out cute, I don't think they quite qualify in the traditional "big cat" category.

Do your Maine Coons eat with their paws and play fetch, SOTHC?

They do and one eats with his paw while lying on his side looking like a Roman Emperor. We have also had to enlarge the cat flap for them which was large enough for the moggies we had before them.

So I think we are all agreed on big cats being the seven I gave plus the cougar (aka the puma or mountain lion).

Scrub the cougar/puma as, according to the big cat site, those are small cats.
