    Is it officially part of the Muslim religion they have to spread the word and convert as many others as possible, and secondly is there any reference anywhere that it's the only valid religion?

    		Muhammad never claimed that Islam was the "only" valid religion. Among the things that Jihad, one of the pillars of Islam, calls for is for the reverant Muslim to fight off any infidel until he admits that "there is no God but Allah". So that could mean that they were "spreading the faith" as it were. However, admitting that there is only one God is not only a principal of the Muslim faith, but of Judaism and Christianity as well. So the Kor'an advises that Jews and Christians not be treated as infidels in Muslim countries.
