What was the population of the world before and after World War II, and how many Jews died in the war?

    Question #58955. Asked by princess9.

    My mistake: The question was:

What was the population of the world before WW2 and after WW2? How many Jews died in it?

So sorry...I do have to place a little blame on my little sister, who came in and pressed the enter button before I could review this question. Once again, I offer my apologies.

Not to worry, princess, I think we all understood what you meant.

Prior to the war, the Jewish population of the world was about 18 million. With the loss of approximately 6,000,000 Jewish lives in the Holocaust, the number was reduced to around 12 million. Today, there are between 13 and 14 million Jews -- a very small number, comparatively speaking.

Incidentally, the Jewish population of Germany before the war was only 500,000-600,000 -- about 1% of the German total. Austria had even fewer Jewish citizens.

Although in princess' corrected question she asks for the population of the "world" prior to and after the war.

What princess wants, she gets. This site gives both world and Jewish populations in 1939, with slightly different figures from those in the first site.

A spoonful of sugar, a breath of fresh air...I could go on and on, Frankie. Thanks a bunch!

Besides, the number of Jews killed in the Holocaust does not usually include those who were fighting (and dying) in the allied armies trying to stop the Nazis from further atrocities. Of the 18 million Jews in the world in 1939, 6 million were systematically murdered by the Nazis, several hundred thousand more perished in Stalinist Russia, and more died in the armies of the US, the UK, France and the Jewish Brigade (set up with bases in Palestine and the UK). It has been estimated that, had Hitler and Stalin never come to power, there would be today about 35 million Jews in the world. As it is, we still haven't recovered the numbers lost in the years of WW2.
