Does anyone know what is this plant? I saw this plant in a disturbed slope in Puente Hills, Los Angeles County. It has a hard shell, when mature the shell become yellowish and has the size around a tennis ball.

Although it does not fit your description at maturity, the picture looks like watermelon to me, except the vines look awfully big in comparison to the fruit. Some kind of gourd, perhaps?

...then again, it could be a type of pie pumpkin, or very large squash...

If the shell stays hard when it's matured & it has a hollow sound to it after it has "dried" for a while, then I would guess that it is a gourd.
