    		Napoleon crowned himself. There are various stories concerning this moment, but it seems clear that he did not "seize" the crown from Pope Pius VII, but had rather determined and planned in advance not to engage in any ceremonies suggesting that he was submitting to Church authority.

    That was a clear indication that religion had nothing to do with Napoleon's coronation. He wanted to prove that France chose him.
