    Preoccupied by the catastrophic results of Hurricane Katrina, Americans have not been paying attention to the late-August floods in Europe. What have been, so far, the worst post-1900 floods in Europe, including eastern Europe to the borders of pre-Revolution Russia?

    I always think of the Netherlands in that regard, although I imagine there've been many in other countries. When I lived in Italy, the people there were still talking about the '53 floods in the Netherlands a couple of years prior. By the way, ALL Americans aren't so riveted by N.O. as to forget history, frankie.

    Robboy, I did not intend to suggest that ALL Americans had forgotten history. I merely discovered, during conversations over the past two or three days, that few people of my acquaintance had been paying much attention to recent (That is, RECENT) events outside of the U.S.
