What is the function of the long tufted tails of those mouse-like mammals?

I was always told, the tails have little or no nerve ends, and are designed to break away easily when the animal is attacked.

This may be true of certain lizards but I don't think any mammals have tails that break off easily.
What tufted-tailed mammals did you have in mind?
Either way, tails have two principal uses: balance and signalling.

So squirrel's tails do break off. I sit corrected.
Their tail heating phenomenon is also new to me but is confirmed on other sites.
