It began on a late August morning, on a day dedicated to a saint who has something in common with a presumptuous mythical musician. By the time it ended, over three weeks later, about 70,000 people were dead. What was it, and why did it occur? Also, what experience did the saint and the musician share?

"Saint Bartholomew's Day" in Paris (August 24, 1572)seems to be meant. Why it occurred? Because people are what they are: born to lynch. But to be more specific: the ultra-Catholic de Guises had been ousted from the French court and felt the Huguenots and their leaders the de Colignys were getting too powerful there.
Just as Marsyas, the presumptuous musician, was flayed by Apollo, the Apostle Bartholomew was flayed by his persecutors.
