Because people are what they are: born to lynch.But to be more specific: the ultra-Catholic de Guises had been ousted from the French court and felt the Huguenots and their leaders the de Colignys were getting too powerful there.
    Just as Marsyas, the presumptuous musician, was flayed by Apollo, the Apostle Bartholomew was flayed by his persecutors.
