In the novels of Frankenstein by Shelly and Jane Eyre by Bronte, the authors do not always write the name of the town or shire down, but rather dash-out part of the location, such in ----shire. Why are places written in this manner?

Many 19th-century novels used a single letter plus a double dash for both personal names and place names. The idea was to suggest realism but also to omit specifics for "propriety's sake." In many cases, the names and places were not real, but the author wanted to imply that they were:
