I checked with my brother and he said the person he's thinking of played sometime between 1981 and 1986. He said that this person had a really bad fumble that he shouldn't have had at all and it cost the Giants the Super Bowl. This quarterback was then quickly fired.

Joe Pisarcik fumbled the ball on an easy kneel play with 20 seconds left allowing the Eagles to score and win. This is now known as The Miracle in the Meadowlands, but it happened in 1978.
"Miracle in the Meadowlands"
The 1978 game between the Giants and the Eagles, when all the Giants had to do was sit on the ball with the lead and less than a minute to go in the game. Instead they call a running play to Larry Csonka and fumble when attempting the hand off from Joe Pisarcik. Herman Edwards picks up the fumble for the Birds and runs it in for a score to win the game.

I'm starting to think my brother forgot what he thinks he remembers and is remembering the wrong thing but forgot that he didn't remember.
Translation: I think you might be right.
