I gather the Mona Lisa took three layers of paint in places before Leonardo was satisfied with the result. Which works by famous artists has x-raying revealed to have had the most layers of paint applied in the quest for perfection?

Gmack, I'm going to give you Albert Pinkham Ryder (1847-1917), a highly eccentric American artist, who continually loaded his paintings with new oil layers and glazes -- up to 30. The result was near-destruction for many of his canvasses, but he is still regarded as one of our major and most creative artists:
