    When writing a work of prose is it necessary to put the thoughts of a character into quotation marks or italics?

    You can surround thoughts with quotation marks or not, according to your preference.

    I suspect many languages don't have punctuation marks at all but apart from subtle changes (like European style quotation marks) does any language use an entirely different system of punctuation marks to English?

    The question came up in forums as to why commas, periods (stops), and question marks go inside or outside quotation marks, depending on which side of the Atlantic the writer lives.
