Beat me to it, because it's Saturday. The word comes from the French for "pull-push", a novelty in the valveless instrument. In fact, there is nothing essentially different between the sackbut and the modern trombone (many trombones have valves to lower their range, but not all of them). Sep 24 05, 10:48 AM
