How is nuclear waste disposed of?

Question #59566. Asked by ilovepuppies. (Sep 25 05 11:27 AM)

They tend to surround it in a concrete block and bury it, so that the half-life can go and erode itself, but most of the radiation can't escape through the conrete.

Most of the high level waste is reprocessed, the residue being sealed in a type of glass and buried deep underground in stable areas. Low and medium level waste is usually buried in similar areas. There's an excellent, and fairly simple, explanation of nuclear, and radioactive, waste disposal at http://www.uic.com.au/wast.htm
