When was 'To Kill a Mockingbird' written?

    Question #59568. Asked by Priscilla9.

It was published in 1960. There's a theory that Truman Capote wrote quite a lot of it, or at least did a substantial editing job on it.

Like most books, there's quite a difference between the publishing date and the time the story is written. Ms Lee actually wrote her story much earlier, prior to her initial submission date in 1957, to J.B.Lippencott Co.

I also think it quite sad that there would be any aspersions cast Ms Lee's way concerning anyone other than she originating and writing that masterfully written story. Anyone who knows anything about her would feel as certain as I that a person of her humility couldn't possibly have done such a thing as suggested by that sort of 'theory'. Facts are plentiful, however, that Mr. Capote ran fast and loose with his own brand of 'borrowing' from other authors, and his chances would have been much more slim of turning out his book of the Kansas murders had it not been for Ms Lee's influence there.

You're quite right about Capote, robboy, and since I've been interested in the genesis of "In Cold Blood" for many years, I am open to any suggestion that Harper Lee smoothed the way for Capote in a midwestern town in which he would, ordinarily, not have been particularly welcome.

But how much do you -- or any of us -- actually know about Harper Lee? She was and remains a quite mysterious and reclusive figure, she wrote one novel and no others. "To Kill a Mockingbird" is one of the great American novels, beyond a doubt; but I believe that debating its origins is not at all an insult.

    Mid-1950s

To Kill a Mockingbird was published in 1960, though it probably took a year or two to write. However, the setting of the story was about thirty years earlier, in the time of the Great Depression.
