I was once told that it is a dog. However I am unsure if it is correct

I believe it's a cat.

A dog is in the Bible because Jezebel is eaten by dogs.

Dogs are definately mentioned several times in the Bible. I do not, however, recall ever reading of cats (unless you consider the big cats - lions and tigers). In fact the Hebrew word for cat - "chatul" - is a relatively recently invented word. Dogs play a peculiar role in the Bible as scavengers. In Exodus, one is commanded not to eat an animal found dead in the field but rather to "toss it to the dogs". One of the favorite curses placed upon kings and queens of Israel (including Jezebel) was: "Those in [X's house] who die in the city shall be eaten by the dogs, and those who die in the field shall be eaten by the birds..."

Mochyn is not correct as I am sure I have heard at a Bible Reading "Peas be to all men who seek and find Him"

Cat is the answer I was looking for. Interestingly enough one reason why there is a superstition against cats is that they don't appear in the Bible.

What superstition? I've never heard of that.
Another explanation might be (though it is a long shot) that cats enjoyed the status of gods in Egypt and, not wishing to transfer such status into Hebrew literature, the authors of the Bible left them out.
Another reason might be that cats were not a common pet in Israel or anywhere else in Asia. In most places here even today, dogs are the preferred house pets. Though today cats generally roam the streets freely here in Israel (thus we very rarely have mouse problems), they were only recently introduced to this land, probably brought along with American immigrants before their populations exploded.

Hamsters, gerbils, canaries and Vietnamese pot-bellied pigs are further domestic animals that probably don't appear much.
