How does light travel inside an optical fiber?

    Question #59665. Asked by dim_dude. (Sep 30 05 7:28 AM)

The "view" from the inside is like looking down a mirrored tunnel... so the light bounces down the sides...

By total internal reflection. Since the angle at which the light travels is always less than the critical angle for the fibre interface (the refractive index of the fibre is greater than the cladding - a bit different to a mirror) the light is totally reflected and hence no losses from the fibre.
