    William LeBaron Jenney's Home Insurance Building was 138 feet tall. Sadly, it was torn down in the early 1930's but is still considered to be an important forerunner of the Chicago School of architecture:

    It also had two floors added in 1890 making it taller than its original 8 floor 138 ft. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Home_Insurance_Buildings
